Queen of Katwe - SPECIAL PRESENTATION

True story of chess prodigy from Uganda. "If there is anyone out there capable of remaining unmoved by this true-life triumph-of-the-underdog sports story, I don't think I want to meet that person." - A.O. Scott, NY Times

Dreamshare Uganda Presents a special screening with the Sosolya Undugu Dance Academy live on stage

“Sosolya Undugu Dance Academy is a professional troupe based in Kampala and we are so honoured to be able to work with them. The academy (Disney hired them to provide actors/dancers/music and choreography for the 2016 film Queen of Katwe) cares for more than 300 children, ensuring they have a safe place to live, heathy food and attend school while at the same time providing robust professional training.” - Dreamshare Uganda

UPDATE: As of this update (Sept. 5) DreamShare Uganda has yet to secure visas for the dancers in time for this screening. If the dancers are not in attendance, DreamShare Uganda will issue passes to Sosolya's upcoming performance in Kitchener. Valerie Hill will speak before the screening.

"Director Mira Nair (Mississipa Masala, Monsoon Wedding) is back with Queen of Katwe, a biographical sports drama based upon the life of Phiona Mutesi, the first Ugandan woman to ever become a titled chess player.

"Mutesi was a born chess prodigy who eventually worked her way up to the World Chess Olympiads, and later became a Woman Candidate Master. Hers is as unlikely and triumphant a life story as you're ever likely to hear, and with Disney and Nair at the helm, it's no surprise to hear that Queen of Katwe is already starting to generate Oscar buzz.

"Starring Madina Nalwanga (as Mutesi), Lupita Nyongo (Oscar winner for 12 Years a Slave), and David Oyelow (Selma), Queen of Katwe is a powerful and inspiring film for all ages." - Alamo Drafthouse
