Talking Pictures: Ivan's Childhood

In WW2, twelve year old Soviet orphan Ivan Bondarev works for the Soviet army as a scout behind the German lines and strikes a friendship with three sympathetic Soviet officers.

The first film from renowned cinematic auteur Andrei Tarkovsky, Ivan's Childhood is a lyrical anti-war reverie that heralded the arrival of one of cinema's most acclaimed masters. In the midst of World War II, orphan Ivan Bondarev joins the Soviet army as a scout behind German lines.

“The visual inventiveness that the director brings to the story is utterly personal and surprisingly spiritual, even transcendent.” -
