Join us Sunday, June 5th at 4:00 pm at the historic Playhouse Cinema in Hamilton to see this landmark coming-of-age film, a breakout role for actress America Ferrera.

Tickets are $15 and all proceeds benefit WAHC!

Real Women Have Curves is a humorous and warmhearted look at a Mexican-American teenage girl who is coming of age in a boiling cauldron of cultural expectations, class dynamics, family duty, and her own personal aspirations.

The film focuses on Ana Garcia (America Ferrera), a curvy high school senior who liberates herself from societal standards and her family’s traditional values on a journey of sexual and cultural awakening. Ana’s dreams of higher education in New York City are at odds with fulfilling her mother’s (Lupe Ontiveros) expectations for her to settle down with a man near her family and work at her sister’s textile factory.

Originally screened in 2002, Real Women Have Curves was a landmark success for an independent film and inspired a generation of filmmakers. In 2019, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant”.
